The European Investigative Journalism and Dataharvest Conference organised by Journalismfund.eu, is the most relevant networking event for investigative and data journalists in Europe. Dataharvest EIJC17 will take place on Friday 19, Saturday 20 and Sunday morning 21 May 2017, with a pre-conference Hack Day on Thursday 18 May.

Freedom of information legislation, WoB, Liberté d’informer, Right to Information – all these names cover the right of the public to know what their institutions do. They are powerful tools to unearth credible information, but how to get started? And which laws to use – which are strongest, most suitable for the topic you work with? This presentation helps you to understand the overall structures so you can get started. In principle these laws resembles each other: the citizens get the right to access to information, while fields like privacy, business and security enjoy varying degrees of protection. There are regional, national and international laws in hierarchic structures and it can make sense to use thematic or other countries laws than ones own.
