Dealing with legal threats in cross-border journalism in Europe - the EIC case

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

We see more and more cross-border collaborations – but the experience with and practice of the legal aspects of this new journalistic method are yet scarce. The recent EIC.network publication on Football Leaks has some interesting aspects to consider: A whistleblower to be protected – with contacts to one of the journalists on the team. An injunction against one of the media in one country – publish or not publish in the others? And what about libel tourism via – say – the UK or Ireland? The legal challenge in of crossborder collaborations is new and will not disappear. The question for this panel is how to balance the interest of freedom of expression versus the danger of being sued across borders. On the panel you’ll meet Dr. Sascha Sajuntz, in-house lawyer at Der Spiegel and author, as well as other lawyers (tbc) of the EIC.network. You’ll also meet William Bourdon, the French defence lawyer of Lux Leaks and other whistleblowers in international cases, Jan Oster, Dutch media scholar and author of a recent book about comparative media law in Europe and Jonathan McCullen from the London based internationally active Media Legal Defence Initiative. Speakers: William Bourdon, lawyer, Cabinet Bourdon, France https://cabinet-bourdon.com/en/equipe/, Jan Oster, lecturer, University of Leiden, Netherlands https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/staffmembers/jan-oster/publications, Dr. Sascha Sajuntz, in-house lawyer at Der Spiegel, Germany www.spiegel.de, TBC Rikke Laulund, in-house lawyer Politiken, Denmark, TBC lawyer / legal advisors at Mediapart, France and El Mundo, Spain, Jonathan McCully, Media Legal Defence Initiative, United Kingdom, http://www.mediadefence.org/users/jonathan-mccully
